City of Boise Given Leadership in Public Health Award

Central District Health Department Director Russ Duke today presented Mayor David Bieter and the Boise City Council with the district’s Leadership in Public Health award for passing a pair of ordinances eliminating smoking in bars, sidewalk cafes, bus stops, city property and the park system. In his remarks to the City Council Mr. Duke applauded the city’s leaders for taking bold steps in protecting the health of the public. He also spoke to the importance of protecting the employees of businesses who would otherwise have to work in environments where they are exposed to second-hand smoke.

Duke was joined in making remarks by CDHD Board of Health members Steve Scanlin and Dr. Ted Epperly.

The Leadership in Public Health award is presented to organizations or government entities that take significant actions that improve public health. Past recipients include the Bogus Basin Mountain Resort for its non-smoking policy and Boise State University for making its campus smoke-free.
