Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc. is recalling approximately 60,000 cantaloupes that were distributed at Costco warehouse stores because of possible Salmonella contamination. There are currently no confirmed Idaho cases linked to the outbreak, although the product was distributed in the state.

The Idaho North Central Health District is working with officials from the University of Idaho to identify close contacts with a student suspected of having bacterial meningitis. Bacterial meningitis can be a very serious disease that causes a swelling of the tissues covering the brain and spinal cord. Still, the risk of close contacts contracting the disease is low, and extremely low for the general student population.

New Drug of Concern - Spice/K2
August 23, 2010Spice is a new synthetic drug being smoked to produce a high similar to marijuana or hashish. It has not yet been banned in Idaho and is marketed and sold online and in local smoke shops as an incense blend "not for human consumption." Despite this warning, Spice is being used as an alternative to marijuana by many who are unaware of the dangers.

Nationwide Egg Recall
Eggs in Their Shells May Put Consumers at Risk for Salmonella
August 20, 2010The current recall of eggs in their shells, or “shell eggs,” is part of an ongoing and intensive investigation by local, state, and federal officials into the cause of recent cases of Salmonella Enteritidis.

Child Exposed to Rabid Bat in Garden Valley
August 5, 2010An Oregon boy under the age of 10 who was visiting Idaho is undergoing medical treatment for a rabies exposure. A bat swooped down and scratched the boy while he was swimming in a pond in Crouch earlier this week. The child’s father captured the bat and then worked with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and Central District Health Department to have the bat tested.

Blaine County Man Begins Treatment After Contact
with Rabid Bat

A Blaine County man encountered an aggressive bat last weekend while fishing in a tributary of the Wood River west of Hailey. The bat later tested positive for rabies. The man began medical treatment, which is highly effective against rabies exposure.
California Pertussis Epidemic Sends Warning
June 25, 2010The state of California has declared an epidemic of Pertussis, also known as Whooping Cough, on the heels of more than 900 confirmed cases and the deaths of five babies. While there is no evidence of a similar rise in pertussis cases in Idaho, public health officials in southwest Idaho believe this is a good time for parents to check the immunization status of their children.

The young are at greatest risk of serious illness and parents should ensure they get vaccinated.
