CDHD Recognizes Falls Prevention Day
Flu Shots Offered at Event
On September 23, 2010 the Central District Health Department (CDHD) will recognize National Falls Prevention Awareness Day with a walk and information fair at the Garden City Library, 6015 Glenwood Street. The first day of fall has been chosen to raise awareness among older persons and their families about the seriousness of falls and ways to reduce fall risk to stay active and independent.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an older adult is treated in a hospital emergency room for a fall every 18 seconds, and every 35 minutes an older adult dies as a result of a fall-related injury. In fact, among older adults falls are the leading cause of injury deaths. They are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.
The good news is that falls are preventable. CDHD sponsors Fit and Fall Proof™ classes at locations in its four county area. These classes provide older adults with a physical activity regimen that enhances balance, strength and flexibility and in the process helps to prevent debilitating falls. Fit and Fall Proof™ classes are offered throughout the state of Idaho.
Falls Prevention activities on September 23rd will include health-related information, demonstrations and a 45-minute walk along the Greenbelt. The event is open to everyone and is free.
As an added bonus FluShot4You.com will be on site at the Garden City Library, 6015 Glenwood Street, to provide flu and pneumonia shots to all interested adults. Flu shots will cost $33.00 and the vendor will bill for Medicare Part B. The pneumonia shot is $65. Most major credit cards, cash and checks are accepted.
