Boise State University Given Leadership in Community Public Health Award
On Monday February 22, 2010 the Central District Health Department recognized Boise State University with the district’s “Leadership in Community Public Health” award. The award was given to Boise State to acknowledge the Smoke-Free policy instituted campus-wide in the fall of 2009. The smoke-free policy applies to all students, employees, contractors, volunteer and visitors on all university-controlled property.
“The dangers of tobacco use are well-established,” said Russ Duke, Director of the Central District Health Department. “We thought it appropriate to recognize Boise State’s effort to improve and maintain a healthy and safe environment for everyone on campus.”
The policy has found wide support among students at Boise State, even those who smoke. Smokers were offered tobacco cessation classes through Central District Health in the year leading up to the smoking ban.
Director Russ Duke and Board of Health Chairman Steve Scanlin presented the award to President Robert Kustra in his office at Boise State University.
