Is there mercury in any of the vaccines for children offered by the Central District Health Department?
- Children's health and safety is the top priority of Central District Health and the Idaho Immunization Program. Today there are no children's vaccines being administered in Idaho that contain mercury. Thimerosal, the mercury-containing preservative that was widely used in vaccines, is no longer present in any childhood vaccines, except flu vaccine.
- Studies have never shown that mercury at the level contained in vaccines causes any kind of neurological problems.
- Thimerosal is being taken out of vaccines for two reasons. First, single-dose vials have largely replaced multi-dose vials in the United States. Therefore the risk of contamination with bacteria or fungi is much lower. Second, other preservatives that don't contain any mercury can be used in some cases.
- If you're considering not vaccinating your children because of fears of potential side effects you might want to think again. When you choose not to vaccinate your child you put the child and others at risk of contracting a disease that could be dangerous or deadly. Consider measles. One out of every 30 children that get measles gets pneumonia. For every thousand that get the measles one or two will die.
