Smoking in the Work Place
Effective July 1, 2008 the Central District Health Department banned all tobacco use on health department property in Ada, Elmore and Valley counties. For the complete story
The Board of Health for CDHD decided to go tobacco-free because of the well-established fact that tobacco use, including being subjected to secondhand smoke, is hazardous to health. In addition to banning tobacco use on CDHD property, the health district is taking the further step of discouraging tobacco users from applying for jobs at the health department. CDHD is not the first organization in the area to enact hiring policies that favor non-tobacco users. In fact, the Ada County Sheriff’s Department has had a similar policy in place for more than a decade.
Ada County Sheriff Gary Raney talked about the Sheriff’s Department policy with the J-105 morning crew on October 23, 2008. Listen to the interview here. (Length 8:42)
Under CDHD policies, employees can use tobacco, but must go off campus to do so. All tobacco-using employees have been offered assistance in quitting.
